Work Permits in Poland 2026 – Types, Requirements, and What You'll Actually Need

You've got a job offer in Poland. Or maybe you're already here, and your employer just realised they need to sort out your paperwork. Either way, you're now staring at a system with several permit types, rules that change depending on your nationality, and processing times that seem to vary wildly. Let's make it simple.

First question: do you even need a work permit?

Not every foreigner does. You don't need one if you're an EU/EEA or Swiss citizen, hold a permanent or long-term EU residence permit, are the spouse of a Polish citizen with a residence permit, hold a Pole's Card, graduated from a Polish university (for 30 months), or are a student working up to 20 hours a week.

The types of work permits

Type A – the standard one, for working with a Polish employer, valid up to 3 years. The employer applies. Type B – board members and senior management. Types C, D, E – workers delegated by a foreign employer. Oświadczenie (declaration) – a simplified route for citizens of Ukraine, Belarus, Armenia, Georgia, and Moldova (~7 days, 100 PLN). Single permit – combines work and residence in one application.

Processing time by city

CityTypical time
Kraków1–3 months
Warsaw2–4 months
Wrocław1–3 months
Gdańsk1–2 months
Poznań1–2 months

What it costs

ItemCost
Permit (up to 3 months)100 PLN
Permit (over 3 months)400 PLN
Employer's declaration100 PLN
Single permit440 PLN

Those are the official fees. In the real world, once you factor in translations and professional help, expect 1,500–4,000 PLN all-in.

The mistakes that cost people weeks

  • The employee applies instead of the employer (Type A is the employer's job)
  • The salary on the application doesn't match the contract
  • Documents submitted without a Polish translation
  • The application goes in too close to the deadline
  • The role or salary changes without updating the permit
